Meredith Chapman, Head Women's Softball Coach

Meredith Chapman has recently been named the new women’s softball coach at North Country Community College.

Chapman, a 2001 graduate of the State University of New York at Potsdam who is also an enrollment counselor at North Country, takes over a team with seven returning players, including Jackie Sullivan, Danielle Bevins, Tiffany Briggs, and Aren Laundree, and a 7-7 record in 2006.

Prior to arriving at North Country in September 2006, Chapman coached at Hamilton High School in the softball and girls’ basketball programs in Hamilton, NY. For three years, she coached in the lower levels of the program and assisted the varsity coach. The Hamilton softball program was successful in the Section III and State Tournaments.

A standout first baseman at Hamilton High School, where she played on the varsity team for three years, and at SUNY Potsdam, where she played on—and captained—a club team, Chapman is eager to begin working with the NCCC team when the student-athletes return to campus Jan. 29.

“We’ll spend the bulk of our time in early spring working on being fundamentally strong, going over throwing, hitting, and pitching mechanics,” said Chapman. “And I want the team to be able to think through the game, to be strategic. I want us be smarter than other teams. Any team that is well prepared has an excellent opportunity to win a softball game.”

The team opens its season April 10 at Clinton Community College and plays its first home game April 14 against Jefferson Community College.

“I am excited about the passion and knowledge of the game that Meredith brings to the program,” said Heather Conger, North Country’s athletics director. “We are very fortunate to have her join our staff. I am confident that Meredith’s experience and work ethic will lead the program to success.”

Chapman hopes to motivate her players to fulfill their potential on the field. “I want us to be as competitive as we can be, giving 110 percent,” said Chapman. “I’d rather focus on achieving small goals for each game, on personal and team bests, than on wins and losses. Not that winning isn’t important,” she added. “It is.”
