Cox named to Region III Team

Freshman Stephanie Cox collected more hardware this weekend after being voted to the 2nd Team All Region Team for Region III.  The All Region Team is voted on by the coaches within the Region and in recognizing her strong season, she was selected as a top forward in the region.  Coach Conger said "It was great being at the meeting and hearing her name called to the 2nd Team All Region.  I'm excited for her and the season she had as she really helped us become a better team and I'm glad that other coaches noticed her ability and felt that she deserved to be voted to the team.  Any time a player of yours gets recoginition for individual play you always feel proud for that player."  Conger also added that "Steph is one of those players who plays the game regardless of awards or personal recognition and I love that attitude.  I can't wait for next season to see how much she matures and grows as a player/person and I think next year we will be a playoff team with Steph leading the way for us."

For Cox, the 33 points in one season is the most points earned in a season since at least 2000 and the most assists in one seasons since at least 2000.  Sophomore Miranda Typhair who lead the team in goals scored finished with 13 on the season which is the econd most goals scored in a single season since 2000 and her 19 goals in two years is the most goals scored by a player since 2000.

Stephanie Cox named to All Conference Team

Freshman Stephanie Cox (Parishville, NY/Parishville-Hopkinton HS) was voted to the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference All Conference Team as a forward.  Cox tallied 3 goals and 1 assist in 5 conference games and lead the team in overall scoring with 11 goals and 11 assists on the season.  For the Women's Soccer Team, Cox is the first player to earn All Conference honors in only the second season the team has competed in the tough Mountain Valley Conference.

Coach Conger commented that "this is a great award for Stephanie and it validates all the hard work she put in all season long in every game and every practice. Our goal this year was the playoffs and she certainly helped us improve as a team to where we just missed the playoffs but anytime one of my players gets recognition from our conference and/or the Region, its' great to see that.  I'm proud of Stephanie and now we need to work on preparing for next year to sustain and/or exceed this high level she has set for herself."

The Lady Saints finished the season 5-10-0 on the year and just missing the playoffs.  Sitting at 4-7 with four games left in the season, the Lady Saints needed to win three of the last four games to solidify a spot in the Region III playoffs.  Battling injuries and a lack of depth, the Lady Saints pushed a very strong Jefferson CC squad to double overtime before losing their first game of the final four games.  Next was rival Clinton were again the Lady Saints were shutout again, only the third time all season, and second time by Clinton.  Next up was Onondaga CC where the Lady Saints won 3-1 which meant they needed to beat SUNY Delhi to perhaps secure the last bid into Regionals.  The Lady Saints lost 2-0 dropping their overall record to 5-10-0 on the year.  With the win over SUNY Delhi, the Lady Saints would have been 6-9-0 on the season and in the top 12 for the Region.  The 2009 final record is a good improvement over the 2008 record of 2-13-0.  For the 2009 season the Lady Saints scored 37 goals, vastly improving over the 2008 results where the team scored 13 goals.  Next year Coach Conger anticipates making the playoffs for the first time since the 2002 season.

A Split Ends the Season

The North Country Women's Soccer Team ended their season Sunday after going 1-1 on the weekend beating Onondaga CC then losing to SUNY Delhi.  The team finishes with a 5-10 record which marks the most wins for the school in the past decade.  The Lady Saints also may have just missed out on a postseason berth with the lost to SUNY Delhi, the first postseason birth in a long time as well.

The weekend started with a 3-1 win over OCC Lazers with goals by Ashley Ehrenborg, Emily Watson, and Stephanie Cox.  Ehrenborg and Watson assisted on each other's goals while Cox was assisted by Sheena Seguin.  Seguin finished 3rd on the team in scoring with 4 goals and 3 assists with all 3 assists coming on game winning goals.  The game was back and forth with the Lady Saints building a 2-0 halftime lead.  The Lazers scored early in the second half but Cox put the game away with her 11th goal.  Courtney Taylor played in net for the win.

Conditions at SUNY Delhi were windy and cold which made for a tough game for both teams. The Broncos scored the game's first goal on a penalty kick from a foul inside the box late in the first half.  Although the Broncos did carry more scoring chances in the first half, the penalty kick was their best chance to score and they took advantage, making the score 1-0 at the half.  The Lady Saints responded at half time with better play but the Broncos continued to take advantage of their bench, substituting in fresh players while the Lady Saints had to endure with no available substitutions.  As the half worn on the Lady Saints earned a few chances to equalize but were unable to capitalize.  Finally with two minutes left in the game the Broncos scored another goal to put the game out of reach.  The loss essentially put the Broncos into the playoffs while knocking the Lady Saints out of contention.

Freshman Stephanie Cox lead the team in scoring with 11 goals and 11 assists in 15 games with Sophomore Miranda Typhair recording 13 goals and 3 assists to finish second overall in scoring.  Freshman Sheena Seguin finished third on the team in scoring with 4 goals and 3 assist while Sophomore Ashley Ehrenborg finished 4th on the team in scoring with 4 goals and 2 assist.

The Lady Saints will say goodbye to seven sophomores this year.  Marcy Adams, Bonnie Tipping, Cassie Barden, Miranda Typhair, Ashley Ehrenborg, and Shauncey Hamlin all finished their career with North Country Sunday against Delhi. Typhair led the team in scoring last year with 6 goals in 8 games and has a total of 19 goals and 3 assists in 19 games played.  Ashley Ehrenborg finished with 5 goals and 4 assists overall in 29 games played starting all 29 games she played.  Tipping finished her career with 3 goals and 1 assist and starting all 28 games she played in.  Hamlin and Barden adding 1 assist and 1 goal respectively with each playing 30 games and Barden starting all 30 games she played.  Adams did not pick up a point but played in 12 games over the course of two years battling injuries but starting all 9 games as a freshman last year.  Thank you to all of these players who gave their all to the program.

Lady Saints Drop Two in a Row

After some rescheduling due to poor field conditions, the Lady Saints returned to action against Jefferson Community College and Clinton Community College and took loses in both games to drop to 4-9-0 on the season.  Although the loses hurt the team's playoff chances, the Lady Saints took Jefferson CC to double overtime before losing a close 2-1 match.  Rival Clinton again shutout the Lady Saints for the second time this season as Clinton won 3-0.

Against the Canoneers, the Lady Saints took the early 1-0 lead on a goal from Sophomore Miranda Typhair.  The goal is her 13th of the season as she continues to lead the team in scoring.  Although the Canoneers pressured the Saints goal, the Lady Saints did a great job responding and keeping possession throughout the game and attacking JCC.  JCC finally got on the board midway through the second half on a free kick goal.  In the second overtime the Canoneers had a chance to win with a penalty kick but the shot went wide.  However less than 30 seconds later Nikkia Raso scored on a perfect shot to win the game.

Rival Clinton has proven to be the Lady Saints toughest matches of the year because for the second time the Cougars have shutout the Lady Saints.  Only two other teams in the region have shutout the Lady Saints all season long.  While playing at Clinton, the Cougars opened a 3-0 lead by halftime and scoring all of their goals in the last 20 minutes of the first half.  The second half was different as the Cougars failed to score because the Saints were able to step up their play.

Coach Conger commented about the games "we played as a team against JCC and I thought we did enough to earn the tie but a perfect shot to win the game against a strong team in the region, I guess there is nothing more to do there.  I'm not happy with the result but I'm very pleased at our team performance against JCC."  About Clinton he adds "after a game like JCC you fear a let down because of all of the emotion used and although we started the game very strong and had some chances ourselves, we couldn't capitalize.  Then Clinton got some confidence, scored a goal and the ladies didn't respond.  The second half we were able to play a bit more but being down 3-0 already, you just try to get back to what we do, which is what we did but too little too late...".

Ralyea strikes again

Diane Ralyea (Moose) scored her second goal of the season against conference opponent Bloomfield to help lead Mercy College to a 3-2 victory.  Moose scored off a corner kick to give Mercy the 2-1 lead midway through the first half and then helped the team score the third goal early in the second half as the game winner.  The win moves Mercy College to 2-5 on the season.

Lady Saints earn split for the weekend

The Lady Saints got a much needed victory this past weekend over Genesee CC to keep their playoff hopes alive.  On Saturday the Lady Saints hosted the GCC Cougars who came in on a high note after beating MVCC and Finger Lakes CC a week earlier, two nationally ranked teams.  Although field conditions were sloppy, the Lady Saints were able to score early and go up 1-0 on a goal from Miranda Typhair.  It was her 11th goal of the season, tying her for the team lead with freshman Stephanie Cox.  Typhair was assisted by Emily Watson who picked up her second assist of the season.  The Cougars responded with a goal about ten minutes later in the first half and that is how the score would end up until overtime.  Both teams traded chances but in the second overtime Sheena Seguin received a pass with a great move inside to play the ball into space for Typhair to score her second goal of the game and a game winner.  With the goal Typhair has 12 goals on the season, doubling her total from last season.  Cox still leads the team in overall scoring as both players lead the Saints attack every game.

Sunday was another test for the Lady Saints as they took on Finger Lakes CC.  Kristen Foote started in net after injuries to Courtney Taylor and Johanna Evans-Welpe from the Genesee game pushed her into action. Foote played well but the Lakers offense was too much as they won 8-0.  This marks only the second time all season the Lady Saints have been shut out and playing without Stephanie Cox due to an ejection the day before did have an impact on the Lady Saints' ability to get up the field to attack.  The Lady Saints are now 4-7 overall and 3-7 in Region III play with four games left this season.  The Lady Saints host Jefferson CC this Wednesday and host region III newcomer Onondaga CC this Saturday before traveling to rival Clinton CC next Tuesday and finishing the season at SUNY Delhi for a potential spot in the playoffs on the line.

Tough week drops Lady Saints to 3-6 overall

Last week took its toll on the Lady Saints as losses to Clinton CC, Mohawk Valley CC, and Herkimer CC dropped the Lady Saints to 3-6 overall on the season and challenging the team's goal of making the playoffs.  This weekend the Lady Saints host Genesee CC (5-5-1) and Finger Lakes CC (8-3-0) which proves to be another tough weekend.

The Lady Saints dropped a tough contest to rival Clinton CC on Thursday losing 4-0.  The Saints came out strong but quickly yielded two goals before settling down and play better soccer.  Credit the Cougars for their continued attack and pressure to not let North Country back in the game.  At times the game went back and forth with chances for each team but the Lady Saints offense was unable to score.  This marks the first time the Lady Saints have been shutout this season.

The weekend represented a tougher test as previously ranked MVCC and #2 nationally ranked Herkimer CC came to town for back to back games.  Both MVCC and Herkimer scored early goals to build a cushion against the Saints attack.  Miranda Typhair scored against the Hawks from MVCC on a free kick when the game was already out of reach for the Saints.  The team rebounded well though to give Herkimer a tough challenge.  Although the Generals scored early the Lady Saints responded quickly to draw the game even on a beautiful goal from Stephanie Cox.  Cox continues to lead the team in scoring in both goals and assists and has ranked as high as #2 in the country in scoring.  The Generals were able to push the lead to 3-1 at half time and aside from a 4-2 score early in the second half, the #2 ranked Generals were able to extend their lead to finish off the Lady Saints at 7-2.  The 2 goals allowed by the Generals are the most against them in one game so far and it can be attributed to the offense from Cox and Miranda Typhair who were able to pressure the General defense which generated scoring chances.  The Lady Saints were able to put 16 shots on goal against Herkimer which Coach Conger is taking as a big positive in a game against a very tough opponent.

According to Coach Conger, "this weekend represents another tough challenge with both Genesee and nationally ranked Finger Lakes.   At some point though, we have to win if we want to make the playoffs and if we can't beat these teams now, then we don't deserve to be in the playoffs."

Lady Saints still .500 on the season

Last week the Lady Saints played host to Word of Life Bible Institute (WOLBI) and Fulton Montgomery CC earning a split for the week.  Against WOLBI the Lady Saints offense was in high gear scoring 10 goals and earning the win with a 10-0 score.  Freshman Stephanie Cox (Parishville, NY) lead the team in scoring with 6 assists and Sophomore Miranda Typhair (Edwards, NY) led the team scoring 3 goals.  Sheena Seguin (Lisbon, NY) and Bonnie Tipping (Parishville, NY) also chipped in 2 goals apiece as the Lady Saints dominated WOLBI from start to finish.

The game against FMCC was a great game with both teams getting chances to score early in the match.  FMCC was able to capitalize early and build a 2-0 lead before the first half despite continuous pressure from the Lady Saints who controlled much of the possession for the game.  Miranda Typhair scored on a direct kick to cut the deficit to 2-1 but FMCC responded with another goal just before the first half to take a 3-1 lead.  The game would end with a 3-1 set back for the Lady Saints despite a strong push all second half to get another goal from the Saints.  The loss drops the Saints to 3-3 on the year with a 2-3 record in Region III play.  The Lady Saints are back in action Thursday September 24th when they host rival Clinton CC and then play Mohawk Valley CC and Herkimer CC back to back this weekend.

Lady Saints split weekend trip

The Lady Saints traveled to Erie CC and Jamestown CC-Cattaragus last weekend in a Region III matchup.  On Saturday the Lady Saints defeated the Kats from Erie CC with a 4-3 OT win.  Stephanie Cox, a freshman from Parishville, NY lead the Lady Saints in scoring by netting all four goals.  Sophomore Miranda Typhair from Edwards, NY and Freshman Emily Watson from Colton, NY added an assist a piece to go with the Lady Saints scoring.

On Sunday the team travelled to Olean, NY to play undefeated Jamestown CC.  The Lady Saints opened the scoring with Stephanie Cox again scoring on a nice assist from Shauncey Hamlin (Burlington, VT).  Jamestown Jaguars pulled even but sophomore Miranda Typhair gave the Lady Saints the lead again with her 5th goal of the season with an assist going to Stephanie Cox.  However the team could not hold down the lead as the Jaguars scored again to make it 2-2 at halftime.  The second half was all Jamestown scoring as they won 4-2.  It was a good game overall with the Lady Saints carrying the play much of the first half but not enough of the second half to secure the win.

Overall the Lady Saints are now 2-2 and 2-2 in Region III play.  Their next match is Wednesday September 15th against Word of Life and then the team picks up Regional play against Fulton Montgomery this Saturday September 19th in a double header with the men's team.

Lady Saints Volunteer for the Xterra Lake Placid Triathlon

The Lady Saints already have spent time this season doing community service as they volunteered to help run the Xterra Triathlon weekend events held in Lake Placid, NY on August 22nd and 23rd.  On Saturday the team helped with the 5k and 10k road and trail race where players helped direct runners and also ran water stations for the competitors.  The Lady Saints worked with members from the Lake Placid Chamber of Commerce and with Xterra TriandDuit organizers to ensure the event ran smoothly and all competitors were safe.  For detailed information about the race you can visit www.triandduit.com/xterralakeplacid/Home.html

Head Coach Stephen Conger was excited about the opportunity to work with the Lake Placid Chamber of Commerce and to get the team together early in the season giving back to the local community.  "Helping the Xterra event on Saturday was a good opportunity for the players to get together as a group outside of our preseason training where they can relax a little and have fun while helping the racers compete in a nice event." Coach Conger said.  "We try every semester, every year to get involved in the community one way or another as our way of saying thanks to the support they give us during our season.  It also helps to promote our team, the athletics department, and the College and to show that we are active members of the community where these students live and go to school."  Coach Conger added.  The Lady Saints will scrimmage SUNY Canton on Wednesday August 26th and then scrimmage Paul Smiths College on Sunday August 30th before starting their regular season against Hudson Valley Community College (at HVCC) on Wednesday September 2nd.

Saints Soccer held its Saints Cup for the first time outside in a 7v7 format, on May 10, 2009.  Competing this year, were Soccer United, FC Avalanche, FC Black Ice, Scotia Soccer and IHC.  The weather was rainy and cold but overall it was a successful tournament.

Saints Return from Opening Weekend 1-1

The Lady Saints returned from the Labor Day weekend 1-1, and 1-0 in Region III play.  The Saints defeated Jamestown Community College 2-1 Saturday in the opening round of the Coliseum Soccer Club Classic tournament.

Bonnie Tipping scored for NCCC with an assist from Ashley Ehrenborg early in the first half.  Shortly after, Jamestown CC tied the game before the half after scoring off a missed ball by Saints keeper Johanna Evans.

North Country scored the eventual game winner before halftime off a corner kick. Morgan Beldock earned a goal after Jessica Diters' shot deflected off Beldock into the back of the Jayhawks’ net.

Evans-Welpe had six saves and North Country had three shots on goal.

On Sunday, the Saints took on Brookdale Community College (NJ) who defeated Herkimer County Community College 3-1 on Saturday.  The Saints again faced some bad luck as a ball deflected off one of their own defenders and into the net to put the Jersey Blues up 1-0.  Brookdale found the back of the net once more before the break.

The score held at 2-0 throughout the entire second half.  Evans-Welpe recorded 9 saves and the Saints had 3 shots on goal.

Saints forward Beldock, and defenders Bonnie Tipping and Diters, were named to the All-Tournament Team.
