Michael Fisher, Head Women's Hockey Coach
Coach Fisher enters his first year as Head Women’s Hockey Coach. Fisher was most recently involved with the National Sports Academy ’s ( Lake Placid , NY ) boys’ hockey program as an assistant coach and goaltending coach.
Prior to his move to Lake Placid in 2005, Coach Fisher was the Head Women’s Ice Hockey Coach at Mount Holyoke College ( South Hadley , MA ). He turned his first season record of 1-3-1 around quickly, going 10-9-2 in his second season with the team. While in Massachusetts, he also coached the Bay State Lions, a women’s team comprised of both high school and college students which competed in tournaments throughout western Massachusetts. Coach Fisher also served as a hockey instructor and Assistant Facilities Manager at a local arena.
Coach Fisher attended Colgate University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1997. There, he was a three year member of the Colgate Ice Hockey Club team as a defenseman. He then went on to graduate from Fordham University with a Juris Doctor degree in 2000. Coach Fisher is currently an attorney in Lake Placid, NY.
MaryAnn Sturgeon, Assistant Women's Hockey Coach
Coach Sturgeon began her hockey career as a referee in 2000, stepping into coaching when a U19 girls program was begun in Evansville, Indiana, in 2003. In 2006, Sturgeon founded the Southern Belles U19 girls team in Owensboro, Kentucky, with the assistance of her son, Tony, and his former high school coach. She served as power skating coach and forwards game coach, as well as treasurer and fundraiser. With just eight experienced players plus seven new recruits, two of whom had never skated at all, the Belles finished their regular season strongly with 10 wins, 3 ties and only 4 losses following the Christmas/New Year's break and a respectable overall record of 13-14-6. The Belles tied for third in the Midwest Girls Hockey League tournament against teams from St. Louis, Missouri; Columbus, Indiana; Columbus and Cincinnati, Ohio; Covington and Louisville, Kentucky; and Nashville, Tennessee.
Sturgeon has been a skating instructor and power skating coach for both hockey and figure skaters in Owensboro, Kentucky, since 2002. She completed her Level 4 coaching certification during the women’s coaching clinic at the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center in 2004. She also maintains a Level 1 referee certification.
Originally from Indianapolis, she is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Music with an additional major in telecommunications. She makes her living in advertising and marketing. Her older son, Nick, is an Indiana State Trooper residing in Indianapolis.
