Wilderness Medicine Training
WILDERNESS FIRST RESPONDER
Course Dates: May 23-30, 2010
Course Description: Prepare for a backcountry emergency by earning your nationally recognized WFR ("woofer") certification. 70-hour professional level training provided by Wilderness Medical Associates. Upon successful completion of the course, students will earn WFR, Anaphylaxis and BLS level CPR certifications. Click here for specific course information.
Registration: NCCC students may register through your academic advisor by requesting that HED 160 Wilderness First Responder be added to your Spring schedule of classes. After you have registered for the course, please print and review the WMA Student Handbook and registration packet and return required forms to NCCC Records Office – Attn: WFR. These documents can be accessed by clicking on the links above.
Community members or non-NCCC students must submit a registration packet and deposit to the NCCC Records Office. Click here to print registration packet and WMA Student Handbook in PDF format. Please return registration forms with $350 deposit to: NCCC Records Office, Attn: WFR, P.O. Box 89, Saranac Lake, NY 12983, or fax 518-891-4236.
Course Fee: Course fee includes texts and instructional materials.

College Credit: If you are not an NCCC student, you may still opt to take your WFR course for three college credits as a non-matriculated student. College credit may be arranged through North Country Community College at current academic year tuition rate. Please contact NCCC Business Office at 518-891-2915 x688 for tuition information.
Deposit, Payment of Balance and Refunds/ Cancellations: For Non-NCCC WFR Students only, a $350 deposit is required at time of registration to secure your space in the course. Fee balance is due in full by 4:30pm, Monday, May 10, 2010. If balance is not paid in full by the deadline and there is a waiting list for the course, student may lose their deposit and seat in the course. Deposit will be refunded in full if course is dropped or cancellation is made by 4:30PM on Monday, May 3, 2010. After May 3, 2010, there will be no deposit refund. Training Provider:Wilderness Medical Associates (WMA) has been teaching WEMT and WFR courses since 1978 and is preferred by Outward Bound, the National Park Service, the FBI, and many college and university outing clubs including Princeton and Colgate. WMA requires all instructors to have substantial experience in emergency medicine, backcountry travel, and teaching and maintains the highest quality assurance standards in the business. WMA also constantly updates curriculum to reflect changes in wilderness and rescue medicine and devotes significant time to practical sessions and realistic rescue simulations, complete with moulage wounds and stage blood. Learning is further enhanced by videotaped rescue simulation.
Methods of Payment: Payments may be made to North Country Community College by mail, over the phone or in person. Methods of payment include cash (in-person only), money order, check or credit card (VISA or MasterCard only). Driving Directions:
From I-87: Take Exit 30 onto Rt. 73 W and continue into Lake Placid. Turn left onto Rt. 86 and continue through Lake Placid and village of Ray Brook into Saranac Lake. Turn right onto Santanoni Avenue at NCCC main entrance sign.
From Rt. 3 W (Plattsburgh): Continue on Rt. 3 through village of Saranac Lake. Turn left onto 86E and proceed right around Lake Flower. After road curves right around Lake Flower, take first left onto Santanoni Avenue at NCCC Main Entrance sign.
From Rt. 3 E (Tupper Lake): Continue on Rt. 3 towards village of Saranac Lake. At the 4-way stop in the village of Saranac Lake (at Town Hall), continue on Rt. 86E towards Lake Placid. After road curves right around Lake Flower, take first left onto Santanoni Avenue at NCCC Main Entrance sign.
Meals and Accommodations: STUDENTS MUST MAKE OWN ARRANGEMENTS FOR MEALS AND LODGING. There is a Grand Union supermarket in Saranac Lake and a Price Chopper in Lake Placid. Moderately priced local restaurants include McKenzie’s Grille, Little Italy Pizza, Eat n’ Meet Grille, Morgan’s 11, Lakeview Deli, Blue Moon Café, China Jade, Pizza Hut, Subway, Dunkin Donuts, McDonald’s.
