What is the SUNY Transfer Guarantee Program?
SUNY students graduating with an A.A. or A.S. degree who wish to transfer directly to a four-year SUNY campus are guaranteed an opportunity to continue full-time study. This guarantee goes into effect if you applied prior to the application deadline and are denied admission at all of your four-year college choices. *Although the program guarantees admission to a four-year college, it does not assure a specific campus or curriculum

When do I want to transfer? Spring? Fall? Next Year?
With the exception of identified college programsStudents can apply to enter college at any time. Each college has deadlines noted in their catalogs and applications. It's important to note that dealines vary from school to school and program to program. SUNY applications are available at the SL Campus in the Student Success Center(S-24), or from your NCCC Transfer Counselor. Private and out-of-state applications are available by contacting the college or university’s Admissions Office. Many applications are accessible on-line. Visit the college or university's web site

Have I selected a major at a four-year college?
If you are uncertain about a major, consider exploring your career options based on your interests, skills and values. Your campus counselor can assist you through counseling and career/ interest inventories.

Is there a list of schools that offer the major I have chosen? Catalogs from many colleges are available.
On-line. SUNY and private college's in New York are available through your campus counselor. See your campus counselor for assistance.College catalogs offer a wealth of information. Look over the catalog for each college being considered. Carefully read the curriculum and general education requirements, and admission and financial aid policies.

I'm not able to leave this area to attend another college. Are there other alternatives available?
Opportunities are available through Excelsior http://www.excelsior.edu College (formerly Regents College) of State University of New York, Empire State http://www.esc.edu/ and Skidmore University Without Walls http://www.skidmore.edu/administration/uww/Skidmore/. Information on these programs is available from your campus counselor.

Have I read the catalogs of the schools that I am considering?
Catalogs from many colleges are available. See your campus counselor for assistance or check on-line. The college catalog is a wealth of information, You should look over the catalog for each college you are considering. Read the curriculum requirements, the general education requirements, and admission and financial aid policies.

Have I considered other factors that may influence my choice? Finances, work-study opportunities, location, etc.
Finances are often a deciding factor in choosing a four-year college. The key to receiving the best financial aid package is maintain strong grade point average (above 3.0), apply early to colleges and identify scholarships available through sources other than colleges.

Do not eliminate private colleges simply because you believe they are too expensive. They can often provide additional funding above TAP and Pell to qualified students. Many colleges offer scholarships to students in NCCC’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

Visiting colleges is the best way to assess the location, atmosphere, and the people at your prospective transfer college. If you call the admissions office, they will schedule a tour for you, and you can talk to the financial aid office, College representative are available to discuss any questions you have.

Have I talked to knowledgeable people about the schools I am considering? Advisors, counselors, and/or four-year college representatives.
College representatives often visit NCCC to meet with students. Stay tuned to the college's web site, read posters and the campus monitors.

Have I filled out and mailed the necessary application and financial aid forms? Have I included fees, if necessary?
If you are a New York State resident and graduating from NCCC, you are allowed a maximum of four fee waivers; a fee is charged for each additional application thereafter. Private colleges will require a fee to apply - but this can sometimes be waived for financial reasons. This needs to be checked out with the financial aid office of the college to which you are applying.

Have I arranged for academic and financial aid transcripts to be sent to each school where I am applying?
You need to have an official college transcript sent to each college to which you apply, from each college you have attended. There is a fee for this service. Arrangements can be made at the Registrar's Office in Hodson Hall or see your campus counselor.

To attain a transcript from another college you need to write to that college's registrar. Most admission decisions are based on three semester's of grades. You can arrange for transcripts anytime during your third semester. They will be sent out at the end of that semester. If you only have one or two semesters of college behind you, be prepared to send a high school or GED transcript.

Am I aware of the application deadlines?
Apply early, especially for more popular majors such as business, teacher education, and criminal justice. Read the suggested deadlines in the SUNY application. The SUNY Application Guidebook has a list of important deadlines under Dates to Remember. Early applications will enhance your opportunities for financial aid and selection of courses and on-campus housing.

Am I aware of the course and grade requirements for the program and college to which I am applying?
Many transfer programs have specific course requirements to be taken during your first two years. The more popular majors frequently require a higher grade point average to be admitted. Also, some majors require a supplemental application into the major or, as in the case of art or architecture, a portfolio of your work. Your campus transfer counselor can help you obtain this information. Also, your advisor may be familiar with specific transfer program requirements

Have I reviewed my last year of coursework at NCCC with my advisor or a counselor to be sure I've met admission requirements at the four-year college?
Once you have fulfilled your specific program requirements at NCCC, you may have elective credits available to finish your Associate's degree. This is a good opportunity to pick courses that also fulfill requirements at the four-year college. Check with both the transfer college and with your advisor or a counselor at NCCC to be certain you are choosing courses that will meet program requirements.

If transferring into Plattsburgh's Education Program (to teach k-12), have I arranged to take my PPST?
If you are applying to SUNY Plattsburgh's Education Department, you will need to take your PPST in your last semester at NCCC. Apply early in order to test at the location of your choice. Your college counselor can supply you with more information about the PPS or call 564-2122 at Plattsburgh Stat, or go to the PRAXIS web site http://www.ets.org/praxis/
