October 2007: NCCC announces Essex & Franklin County Scholars Award:
SARANAC LAKE – North Country Community College is pleased to announce the creation of the Essex and Franklin County Scholars Award starting with the fall 2008 entering class. Any 2008 graduating public high school senior who is a resident of either Essex or Franklin County and is in the top 20 percent of their class will receive a full two-year tuition scholarship for their full-time attendance at North Country. This scholarship carries a minimum two year total award of $6,680.
This scholar’s award is recognition of Essex and Franklin Counties’ best and brightest high school graduates. “The creation of this award will allow these gifted students the opportunity to continue their education in college without the burden of huge student and parent loan debt. Our secondary goal is to keep these individuals within our two counties and curtail the ‘brain drain’ that has been an ongoing problem. It is a win-win situation for all involved,” stated NCCC President Dr. Gail Roger Rice.
Rice added, “With the newly announced Franklin University bachelors degree program available to all North Country graduates, a student can now stay within our community for four years, save over $6,600 in their first two years of a four-year degree and continue on to a bachelors degree via online coursework at Franklin University and supplemental courses taken on North Country’s campus. I am confident in saying that students and their parents will see a combined college cost savings of over $20,000 through these two programs.”
Funding for the Essex & Franklin County Scholars award is provided by the NCCC Foundation through the recent generous donation of $2.4 million from an anonymous donor.
Ed Trathen, Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services, noted, “Complete details of the North Country Community College – Essex & Franklin County Scholars Award will be mailed to all public high school guidance offices within the two counties. June 8, 2007 - Malone PTK gives fundraiser money to charities:

The Malone campus of North Country Community College has an active chapter membership in Phi Theta Kappa (the International Honor Society of the Two Year College – PTK). During this past Spring semester, as part of the PTK mission statement several fundraisers were held to benefit local charities. Fees that were collected from SnoCross parking, proceeds from a lottery ticket raffle, as well as a raffle to win a Jesse Adams custom woodcarving netted $325 to be donated. The chapter chose to present checks to the American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society, and the American Heart Association. Each member of PTK would very much like to thank everyone who helped make these fundraising efforts a success.
North Country Community College was chartered into PTK in November of 1999, and is very pleased to have a chapter on each of its campuses: Malone, Saranac Lake and Ticonderoga.
May 28, 2007 - Honorary 'millionth degree' given at NCCC graduation:

From the over 32,000 New York State Community College students who will graduate this year, an unknown student will be the one millionth person to receive a degree.
According to information in a SUNY press release, “Since SUNY’s inception in 1948 and through Spring of 2006, the community colleges (have) awarded 968,733 degrees. The SUNY Institutional Research unit estimates that another 32,254 will be awarded for the Spring and Summer 2007 semesters, bringing the projected total to 1,000,987, surpassing the one million mark.”
Since it would be statistically impossible to determine just who this particular graduate is, it was decided that each of the 30 community colleges could choose one student from its graduating body for an honorary “millionth student” award. At the Saranac Lake campus of North Country Community College (NCCC), the name was randomly picked from a list of 304 – and the lucky recipient was Adam DiVencenzo, a sophomore student from Norwood, NY.
DiVencenzo was clearly surprised. Just like all the other graduating students, his name was called, he went up to the dais – when the proceedings were halted and a proclamation was read by NCCC President Dr. Gail Rogers Rice, followed by wild applause.
This has been quite a year for this young man – he interned at USA Luge in Lake Placid, graduated with an Associates degree or as Larry McFaddin, Director of the NCCC Sports and Events Management Program said, “Adam DiVencenzo was one of the top students in the NCCC Sports and Events Management Program. Adam’s dedication and perseverance to academic success in his career field has led him to a degree from NCCC and acceptance to Cortland State’s Sport Management Program this Fall. The opportunities SUNY has provided to him are a testament to the excellence of the entire college educational system in New York State.”
NCCC could not agree more, but of course aren’t overlooking the other 303 student graduates that day – those who come from the eclectic mix that is the hallmark of community colleges everywhere, what SUNY refers to as “traditional (18- to 21-year-old) students ... single parents, working adults, international students, students learning English as second language and many individuals who are the first in their family to attend college.”
North Country Community College not only salutes Adam DiVencenzo, but each and every other NCCC graduate this year.
