Lending Library Resources: The LAC has a variety of resources material including videos, textbooks, study notebooks, reference books and writing handbooks pertaining to a variety of subjects taught at NCCC. These are part of our lending library and students are free to take them out for a week at a time. The video collection includes tapped math lessons for those who would benefit from seeing specific lessons repeated when they have time available.
Professional and Peer Tutoring: The LAC offers one-on-one and small-group tutoring with professionals, NCCC instructors, and NCCC students who have demonstrated academic excellence in the subjects they are tutoring. Students should come in to schedule an appointment with a tutor, but walk-in students will be assisted if a tutor has a cancellation and is available. Appointments can be made on a one time only basis, for several times a week, for several weeks, or as a standing appointment throughout the semester. Students are responsible for calling in whenever they are unable to attend a scheduled appointment.
Study Groups: Students who are in the same class and who want to study together can come into the LAC to sign-up for a study group. Though students often form informal study groups from time to time, LAC study groups motivate students to meet on a regular basis each week. Research has proven that students who go over "rehearse" their material a little each day, without waiting until the last minute to cram, are able to retain information better, are less stressed, and thus have higher test scores. Many students also find it productive to meet for a half hour after class to make sure their lecture notes are complete and to ensure they have gleaned the most important information from their assigned chapters in the textbook. To many, it's helpful to spend part of their study-time studying together for tests-quizzing each other, creating mock tests, and going over confusing points.
Assistance with Papers: Students at the Saranac Lake campus can receive assistance developing and organizing their papers, as well as editing them for the final draft. All papers are welcome, not just those required in English classes. Students must first revise their rough drafts before either bringing a copy of their paper in to the LAC or e-mailing their papers to sllac@nccc.edu. For lengthy papers, 24-48 hours must be given to LAC editors. The student must also schedule an hour-long appointment so the editor can go over any suggestions and errors sighted. The editors will not correct the paper, but will indicate what type of error is present within the sentence. A copy is sent to the instructor and a copy is maintained in the LAC files.
