Nursing
NUR 101 Nursing I (7 credits): An introduction to the fundamental principles of nursing, concepts and theories of wellness and illness, human psychological and biological responses, nursing interventions, practices, and processes. Prerequisites: Acceptance and enrollment into the PN program, compliance with medical requirements, CPR certified.
NUR 102 Introduction to Pharmacology (1 credit): An introduction to the general concepts and terminology of the preparation and administration of medications, including the nursing responsibilities and legal implications involved. Basic drug classifications and prototypes are studied. Clinical practice, reinforcement and enhancement of content is continued in NUR 101. Prerequisite: Taken concurrently with NUR 101, exceptions made by the Director of Nursing.
NUR 104 Nursing II (7 credits): Application of the nursing process to the care of children and adults who are experiencing common medical-surgical health problems. The childbearing family will be studied with an emphasis upon individual needs and health maintenance of mother and newborn. Principles of nutrition, pharmacology, biological and social sciences, and legal-ethical issues are included. Opportunities for application of theory are provided through planned clinical experiences. Prerequisite: Successful completion of NUR 101, NUR 102 and BIO 100).
NUR 200 Transition to AD Nursing (2 credits): A transition for PNs and GPNs into the AAs nursing curriculum. Nursing process is reviewed with emphasis on assessment, diagnosis, and documentation (required at the RN level). Specific physical assessment and history-taking skills appropriate to the AAS students are taught, with opportunities to apply content in simulated situations. Students also explore role differentiation of the RN and PN. Prerequisites: Acceptance and enrollment into the program, compliance with medical requirements, CPR certified.
NUR 201 Maternal / Child Nursing (5 credits): A study of the physiological and psychological responses to pregnancy, childbirth, and common pediatric health problems. RN level assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation are emphasized within the framework of nursing process. Prerequisite: Successful completion of NUR 200.
NUR 202 Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing (5 credits): A study of the nursing care of individuals, families, and groups experiencing potential or actual psychosocial dysfunction. Collection of data, development of appropriate nursing diagnoses, planning, and goal setting are emphasized. Prerequisite: Successful completion of NUR 200.
NUR 203 Managing Patient Care (1 credit): A focus on the non-clinical components of managing patient care within a health care agency, with emphasis on a hospital setting. Exploration of professional and individual values as they relate to care delivery systems is included. Prerequisite: Second year nursing student or permission of the Director of Nursing.
NUR 204 Adult Medical - Surgical Nursing (9 credits): A focus on the role of the RN, in contrast to that of PN, applying the nursing process to care of people with moderate to severe health problems. Clinical work in interpretation of data and decision making as a member of a health care team are emphasized. Written care studies are used to promote competence in formulating and evaluating nursing care plans. Prerequisite: Successful completion of NUR 200, NUR 201 , NUR 202, NUR 203 and BIO 215.
NUR 205 Professional Seminar (1 credit): Preparation of students as working members of the health care team, and exploration of the interrelationships with other team members is emphasized. The history of nursing is surveyed and current issues and trends in health care, nursing and nursing education are addressed. Legal, ethical, and professional responsibilities of nurses are examined, as are concepts of professional commitment and accountability. Prerequisite: Successful completion of NUR 200, NUR 201, NUR 202 and NUR 203.
