Degree Programs - Certificate in Practical Nursing (LPN)

Certificate in Practical Nursing (HEGIS  5209.20)

The Nursing Program adheres to a career-ladder concept in nursing education that provides upward mobility for students, without repetition of previous education and experience.  Courses of study in Nursing consist of a two-semester, full-time Practical Nursing Program and a two-semester, full-time Associate Degree Nursing Program for PNs and GPN's.

Successful completion of the Practical Nursing course of study leads to a Certificate of Achievement, and eligibility to make application to take the examination for licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse.  Completion of the Practical Nursing course of study does not assure admission into the Associate Degree Nursing Program.  Students must apply for entry into this program and compete with all other applicants of that year.  Since the Practical Nursing Program and the Associate Degree Nursing Program are separate programs, all individuals, including graduates of the Practical Nursing program at NCCC, must make formal application for consideration for entry into the Associate Degree Nursing Program.  For more information on admission into Allied Health Programs at NCCC click here.

Successful completion of the Associate Degree Nursing course of study leads to an Associate in Applied Science degree and eligibility to make application to take the New York State Board Nursing examination for licensure as a registered professional nurse.

The certificate in Practical Nursing and Associate Degree Nursing programs are approved and registered by the New York State Board of Nursing in accordance with the rules and regulations of the New York State Education Department.

To be eligible for the Certificate in Practical Nursing, a "C" (73%) or better in all required nursing, English, math, psychology, and biology courses (BIO100, ENG101, PSY101, NUR101, NUR102, BIO201, PSY202, NUR104, MAT108).  To be considered as transfer credits into the Practical Nursing Program, BIO100 and BIO201 must have a grade of "C" or better (a "C-" grade is not acceptable).  All other courses from above could be transferred as long as they adhere to NCCC's policy for approval of transfer credits.  A "C-" or lower grade in NUR101, NUR102, BIO100, ENG101, PSY101 in the fall semester will not permit the student to advance to NUR104 in the spring term; however, other "non-nursing" courses may be taken.  This program must be completed within three years of taking the first nursing course.  The ADN degree as described here includes the 36 credits of course work required to complete the PN certificate.  Students must have completed the courses specified in the PN program to be eligible for admission to the ADN program.
