ADVENTURE EDUCATION SERIES
Community members are invited to participate in a wide variety of outdoor courses that introduce beginners to essential outdoor skills or allow experienced adventurers to learn new or brush up on forgotten skills. From backcountry cooking, wilderness medicine and winter survival to teambuilding, GPS and Canoe Safety, the Adventure Education Series strives to provide quality outdoor instruction and personal growth opportunities for community members of all ages and interests.
FEBRUARY
February 16: Snowshoe Peak Hike - Hurricane Mountain, 9am - 4pm, $50. Enjoy the glory of winter in the Adirondacks with this moderate snowshoe hike up Hurricane Mountain. The basic principles of snowshoeing and proper use of equipment will be explained. Enjoy this opportunity to experience a breathtaking view of the Adirondack High Peaks as well as Lake Champlain and the Green Mountains of Vermont. Students under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. A reasonable level of physical fitness is required for this course. Participants must provide own transportation; class begins at the trailhead. See required personal equipment list. Class size limit: 13. Fee includes group equipment and instruction.
February 20: After School Adventure Series Grades 3-6: Winter Shelter Construction, 3-4:30pm, $20. Join in the fun with outdoor winter activities! The first session in our After School Series, this course is designed to give a basic introduction to varied outdoor skills in the winter time. Students will learn how to construct a winter shelter through hands-on instruction. Join us for one or all three after school programs! Please dress warm for potentially snowy/winter weather. Class size limit: 20.
February 27: After School Adventure Series Grades 3-6: Map and Compass Introduction, 3-4:30pm, $20. The second session in our After School Adventure Series. Spend a fun afternoon learning map & compass skills through outdoor games & practice exercises.Join us for one or all three after school programs! Please dress warm for potentially snowy/winter weather. Class size limit: 20.
MARCH
March 1: Winter Survival Skills Workshop, 10am-4pm, $40. This course is ideal for a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts, from Scouts to hunters to winter campers. It covers the important skills needed to effectively meet the challenges of winter camping. Learn how to build a snow quinchee, how to build a fire in winter and how to obtain potable water in the winter backcountry. Students under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the WRL River Street Hall Classroom. See required personal equipment list. Class size limit: 13. Fee includes group equipment and instruction.
March 5: After School Adventure Series Grades 3-6: Adventure Treasure Hunt, 3-4:30pm, $20. The final session in our After School Adventure Series. Map & compass skills will be put to the test on an outdoor treasure hunt. Prizes for everyone! Join us for one or all three after school programs! Please dress warm for potentially snowy/winter weather. Class size limit: 20.
March 8: Over 50 Adventure Series - Snowshoe Peak Hike Big/Little Crow Mountains, 9am-3pm, $50. Are you an Adirondack Mountain lover? Looking to get out and hike, paddle or snowshoe? Experience the Adirondack backcountry first hand! Enjoy a moderate snowshoe hike up Big and Little Crow Mountains. March 8: GPS for Recreational Users, 10am-4pm, $40. Learn GPS technology to improve your outdoor experience & navigational techniques. Become more confident exploring off-trail locations in numerous backcountry settings. Topics may include anatomy of a GPS unit, programming and tracking waypoints, applying GPS to map work, and introduction to mapping software. Course includes classroom instruction and outdoor applications; training and GPS units provided for student use by Lynn Malerba, Adirondack Connections Guide Service. Meet at WRL River Street Hall Classroom. Class size limit: 12. Subject to sufficient enrollment. Fee includes group equipment and instruction.
March 19: Teambuilding Facilitator Workshop, 6 -9pm, $40. This workshop is geared towards educators, managers and other professionals that want to enhance their leadership and teambuilding skills. Three-hour session is focused around a "Teach the Teacher" concept. Learn how to facilitate ice-breakers, initiatives and other motivating exercises. Meet at the WRL River Street Hall Classroom. Class size limit: 15. Fee includes teambuilding materials.
APRIL
April 5: Over 50 Adventure Series - Rooster Comb Peak Hike, 9am-3pm, $50. Are you an Adirondack Mountain lover? Looking to get out and hike, paddle or snowshoe? Experience the Adirondack backcountry first hand! Enjoy a moderate peak hike up Rooster Comb Mountain overlooking beautiful Keene Valley and the Great Range. Join us for one or all three Over 50 adventures!These activities are designed for the mature adventure lover. A reasonable level of physical fitness is required for this course. April 12: Trailess Peak Hike - Catamount, 9am-5pm, $50. Always wanted to learn how to bushwhack up a mountain in the Adirondacks? Come join a trailess exploration of Catamount peak in Wilmington and discover how to make your way to the summit without trail markers. This is a great introduction to the basics of topographic maps and effective use of the compass. A reasonable level of physical fitness is required for this course. See required personal equipment list. Class will meet at trailhead. Class size limit: 13. Feeincludes group equipment and instruction.
April 16: Backcountry Kitchen - Baking Pizza & Breads, 5-7pm, $30. The first session of our Backcountry Kitchen series. Learn how to make delicious and nutritious meals on a backcountry camp stove. Discover how to bake pizza & bread from scratch and impress your friends on your next outing. Three backcountry cooking sessions will be offered; join us for one or all of our culinary delights. Yum! Meet at WRL River Street Hall Classroom. Fee includes ingredients & group equipment. Students under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Class size limit: 16.
April 19: Map and Compass for Hikers and Hunters, 10am-4pm, $50. Expand your outdoor skills with this introductory course that teaches the fundamentals of topographic map reading and compass use and how to combine the two skills to better find your way in the Adirondack backcountry. Class format will be comprised of morning classroom session and afternoon skill application off campus. Off campus activity will involve foot travel through possibly steep terrain and/or wooded areas. A reasonable level of physical fitness is required for this course. Participants must provide own transportation to local trailhead. See required personal equipment list. Students under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Class size limit: 13. Fee includes group equipment and instruction.
April 23: Backcountry Kitchen - One Pot Meal, 5-7pm, $30. The second session of our Backcountry Kitchen series. Learn how to make delicious and nutritious meals on a backcountry camp stove. Take home new ideas for a scrumptious meal with only one pot to clean up afterwards. Three backcountry cooking sessions will be offered; join us for one or all of our culinary delights. Yum! Meet at WRL River Street Hall Classroom. Fee includes ingredients & group equipment. Students under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Class size limit: 16.
April30: Backcountry Kitchen - Desserts, 5-7pm, $30. The third session of our Backcountry Kitchen series. Learn how to make delicious and nutritious meals on a backcountry camp stove. This class will explore several options for a perfectly sweet ending to your backcountry meal. Three backcountry cooking will be offered; join us for one or all of our culinary delights. Yum! Meet at WRL River Street Hall Classroom. Fee includes ingredients & group equipment. Students under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Class size limit: 16.
MAY
May 4: Canoe Safety Course, 10am-3pm, $60. Enjoy canoeing the countless lakes and rivers of the Adirondacks? Interested in learning about how to conduct safer flat-water canoe travel? Join the AES Canoe Safety Course and learn emergency procedures such as t-rescues, in-water entries and capsize recoveries. Additionally, the course will focus on canoe anatomy, paddling strokes and portaging techniques. Come join our one-day fun and informative session! Students under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. See required personal equipment list. Meet at the NCCC Pool, followed by a paddling session on Lake Flower.Class size limit: 12. Fee includes group equipment and instruction.
May 6 & 13: Primitive Shelters & Fire Building, 5-7pm, $60. Come join the fun in learning different techniques in backcountry primitive fire and shelter building! This class will focus on flint/steel and bow drilling methods as well as constructing different shelters from a simple 8 x 10 tarp. In addition, students will learn how to construct a survival backpack. Students will take home their own fire kit. Class meets at the WRL River Street Hall Classroom. Students under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. See required personal equipment list. Class size limit: 13. Fee includes materials & supplies.
May 7: Weekend Backpacking for Beginners, 6-9pm, Classroom Session. May 10-11, 9am- 5pm, Overnight Trip, $150. Do you want to try backpacking but don't know how to get started? Then this course is for you. Challenge yourself with this two day, one night excursion in the Hurricane Primitive area of the Adirondack Park. The fundamentals of proper equipment choices, camping techniques and safe backcountry travel will be covered. Leave No Trace principles will also be explained and utilized. Course itinerary will involve a small peak hike. Bring your enthusiasm and sense of adventure to this introductory course. See required personal equipment list. Evening class will meet at WRL River Street Hall Classroom. Overnight trip will meet at the trailhead; participants must provide own transportation to trailhead. Class size limit: 10. Fee includes food, group equipment and instruction.
May 16: Over 50 Adventure Series - Sunset Canoe Paddle Saranac River, 4-8pm, $50. Are you an Adirondack Mountain lover? Looking to get out and hike, paddle or snowshoe? Experience the Adirondack backcountry first hand! Enjoy a sunset canoe paddle down the Saranac River. Join us for one or all three Over 50 adventures!These activities are designed for the mature adventure lover. A reasonable level of physical fitness is required for this course. See required personal equipment list. Participants must provide own transportation; class begins at the trailhead. Class size limit: 13. Fee includes group equipment and instruction.
May 18-25: Wilderness First Responder, 8am-6pm, $675. Prepare for a backcountry emergency by earning your nationally recognized WFR ("woofer") certification. 72-hour professional level training provided by Wilderness Medical Associates. Upon successful completion of the course, students will earn WFR, Anaphylaxis and BLS level CPR certifications. Fee includes textbooks and instructional supplies. May 27-29: Wilderness First Responder Challenge Recertification, 8am-6pm, $295. Recertification course for graduates of any Wilderness First Responder course of 64 or more hours. Training provided by Wilderness Medical Associates. Upon successful completion of this three day, 24-hour course, students will earn WFR, Anaphylaxis and BLS level CPR certifications. ADVENTURE EDUCATION SERIES COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
*Equipment and documentation required for all off-campus and overnight courses:
1.For all off-campus outings, a daypack is required with the following items: rain jacket and pants, warm hat, gloves/mittens, warm insulating top, 2 water bottles, lunch, snack, sturdy hiking boots (non-cotton layers ideal).
2. Three-layer clothing system is recommended for all off-campus outings (long underwear wicking layer, fleece or equivalent insulating layer, shell water/windproof layer).
3. For overnight courses, the following additional personal equipment is required: wool socks, fleece pants, heavy fleece/insulating top, headlamp/flashlight, pocket knife, sun hat and personal toiletries & medications.
4. All students participating in off-campus courses must review pre-course information and prior to course start submit all required forms with signature or parent/guardian's signature. Pre-course information and documents will be provided at or near time of registration.
5. First Aid supplies will be carried by AES Staff.
Wilderness Outing Field Policies
- All NCCC sponsored activities are drug-free and alcohol-free. Use of these substances is prohibited. If use is discovered, consequences may include immediate removal from the course.
- For safety reasons, students must comply with the requests of all field instructors and support staff.
- Students must provide own transportation to the trailhead. If a student arrives late and the group has departed, they may not join the group unaccompanied by AES staff.
