Admission to the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program
Students currently completing the Practical Nursing program will be granted conditional acceptance contingent upon successful completion of the PN program. Students required to take a competitive nursing exam will also receive conditional acceptance contingent on successful completion of the exam. All potential students must have successfully completed all examinations prior to commencing the Fall semester. Meeting these requirements will not guarantee admission to the program, which is highly competitive.
Students must meet the following admission requirements prior to enrollment:
- Successful completion of an accredited PN program.
- Achieved a minimum of 2.25/4.0 in the following courses:
- BIO 100 Human Biology
- BIO 201 Microbiology
- Achieve a minimum of 2.0/4.0 in the following courses:
- ENG 101 English Composition I
- PSY 101 Introductory Psychology
- PSY 202 Developmental Psychology
- NUR 101 Nursing I
- NUR 102 Introduction to Pharmacology
- PED (1 credit)
- General Elective (3 credits)
- Hold a valid CPR (AHA or RC) card for infant, child, and adult.
- Be in good academic standing from previous institutions.
- Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5/4.0 from a PN program.
Please note:
- Students who do not meet any one portion of the requirements will be granted admission into the A.S. Degree in Math & Science until such requirements have been satisfied.
- Admission is limited based on space available.
- The Vice President for Academic Affairs reserves the right to deny admission to any person, whom he feels cannot successfully complete the program without prior course study.
The following criteria are used to determine admission to the program:
- Successful completion of a State-approved practical nursing program. Completion of the practical nursing course of study Does Not Assure admission into the ADN (Associate Degree Nursing) Program.
- Current New York State practical nurse licensure is required unless the applicant is a recent graduate of the practical nursing program. Recent graduates may be provisionally accepted until successful completion of the National League of Nursing Examination. Successful completion of this exam must occur prior to the September entrance date and verified proof must be submitted to the Records Office of the College.
- BOCES/Vocational School PN Students: Students who complete a BOCES Practical Nursing Program must successfully pass the National League of Nursing Exam for consideration into the Associate Degree Program. It is the student's responsibility to register with the Enrollment Management Office at North Country Community College for this exam no later than April 1 prior to the Fall Semester they plan on attending the College. Students who successfully pass the NLN will be granted 15 credits to apply toward their degree at North Country Community College. This exam will stand in lieu of Nursing I & II and Pharmacology.
- A recent graduate must have proof of eligibility to take the NCLEX-PN and proof of application to take the NCLEX-PN to be licensed in the State of New York as a Practical Nurse. A valid, signed Practical Nurse License must be given to the Records Office for copying for NCCC's records at the time of application to the program (if the applicant is not a recent graduate). All students must have a signed copy of their Practical Nurse License on file at NCCC prior to the Fall semester. Any student who does not have a license on file will not be registered or will be de-registered in all required nursing courses for the Fall semester.
- All candidates must meet admission requirements to NCCC.
- A graduating candidate from the NCCC PN program or candidate, who has graduate from another PN program, five or more years prior to admission, must obtain a passing score on the National League for Nursing Mobility Exam prior to admission. If is the student's responsibility to register with the Enrollment Management Office at North Country Community College for this exam no later than April 1, prior to the Fall semester. A fee is charged by the National League for Nursing.
- All candidates must hold a valid Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR card for the infant, child and adult CPR. The data of certification must be the summer prior to the Fall admission.
