Admission to the Practical Nursing (LPN) Program

Enrollment in the PN and ADN programs is determined on an annual basis and requires all interested students to formally apply for admission each year.  This includes students who have succesfully completed a PN program at NCCC as well as those denied admission from a previous year.  Tiebreaker consideration will be given to those applicants who have submitted an application prior to December 15th of the year before they are seeking Fall admission.

All students who wish to be considered for the ADN program must first complete a PN Program and be licensed as a Practical Nurse in the State of New York, whether or not the student is a recent NCCC graduate.  Recent graduates must take the first possible PN exam to ensure licensure prior to the Fall semester of enrollment in the ADN program.

Applicants for the ADN program, who as students completed a PN Certificate at NCCC after 2000, will have their grades from that College experience used to determine acceptance into the ADN program.  However, students that graduated prior to 2000 or who have graduated from another institution must take a comprehensive nursing exam, such as the NLN or HESI, to determine acceptance into the ADN program.  Students interested in taking a comprehensive exam must contact the Enrollment Management Office.  There will be a fee to take the exam.

Students who wish to be readmitted into the PN or ADN programs must submit an application to the Enrollment Management Office.  These decisions will be based upon available space in the program at the time of application and committee approval.  Thsi committee will be comprised of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Director of Nursing, and a faculty member from the Nursing program and a representative from the Enrollment Management office.  Due to the competitiveness of the program, students who were previously academically ineligible to continue in the program will normally have a five-year waiting period before being considered for re-admission.

All students who have been admitted to teh Practical Nursing (PN) Certificate or Assocate Degree Nursing (ADN) will be required to show proof of student nurse professional liability insurance and maintain coverage throughout the course of the program.

All students must meet the following minimum requirements for consideration.  Meeting these requirements will not guarantee admission to the program, which is highly competitive.

  • Completion of NYS/GED Diploma.  Out of state residents must score a minimum 450 Math and 420 Verbal on the SAT or 17 on Math and 17 in English portion of the ACT.
  • Completion of NYS Regents Biology with passing regents score of 80 or greater.
  • Completion of NYS Regents English II with passing regents score of 75 or greater.
  • Completion of NYS Regents Course II with passing regents score of 75 or greater.
  • Non-NYS graduates must have completed similar requirements at their previous institution.

Please note:

  • Students who do not meet any one portion of the requirements will be granted admission into the A.S. Degree in Math & Science until such requirement has been satisfied.
  • Admission is limited based on space available.
  • The Vice President for Academic Affairs reserves the right to deny admission to any person, whom he feels cannot successfully complete the program without prior course study.

Transfer students must be in good academic standing at the institution attended prior to NCCC with a minimum GPA of 2.50/4.00 and must meet the above requirements or their equivalent.
